Quadratus Lumborum (QL)

The Quadratus Lumborum (QL) is a deep muscle on both sides of the lower back.  Originates from the iliac crest and inserts on the transverse process of lumbar one through five and the lower part of the twelfth rib. The QL stabilizes the lower back while upright and has a role in side bending.  The Quadratus Lumborum muscle is the most overlooked muscle in back pain

One or both of the QL muscles can tighten and close the distance between the rib and the hip crest.
