Subscapularis

The subscapularis is a large triangular muscle that fills the subscapular fossa and inserts into the lesser tubercle of the humerus and the front of the capsule of the shoulder joint. The subscapularis is the largest, strongest muscle of the rotator cuff. It is the only rotator cuff muscle able to perform medial rotation. In some positions, it can also assist very weakly in adduction of the humerus at the shoulder joint. The rotator cuff muscles are essential in shoulder movement and help maintain glenohumeral joint stability. The subscapularis muscle lies at the anterior surface of the scapula.
